Welcome to Redland AFC

Report: Jeff Stephenson

WE’VE had the pre-season and it’s been a tough and arduous slog at alternating venues in sweltering conditions; we’ve had the training camp in Byron Bay; we’ve had our series of three practice matches; we’ve been vibrant, keen and energetic on the training track.

Now the time has arrived.

Yes, season 2017 is almost upon us and it will be a bold, confident and exuberant Redland Bombers that is about to swing into NEAFL action.

Report: JEFF STEPHENSON

HAYDEN Bertoli-Simmonds has been named as Redland NEAFL captain and at just 21 is the youngest Bomber to be awarded the honour.

Hayden was named skipper at the Bombers jumper presentation function at the Victoria Point Sharks Club on Thursday night.

All players on the senior list were presented their jumpers by youngsters representing the junior club.

Hayden, the 2016 NEAFL Rising Star winner, was thrilled to accept the captaincy.

“This is something that is very much appreciated,” Hayden told a packed auditorium.

In six short years the NEAFL has had a profound impact on the AFL and Redland has more than held its own as one of the chief drivers behind the increased status of the competition.

Although yet to win a title, benchmark figures released recently, show Redland figures consistently in the upper echelons of the league in several areas.

For instance, 77 players have been drafted by AFL clubs in those six years and Redland has been the provider of 11 of those - second only to the GWS Giants, which has had 14 players drafted and equal with the Sydney Swans, also with 11.

Redland plays their second practice match on Saturday against the Aspley Hornets at South Pine Sporting Complex Brendale.

The game commences at 3.00pm
